“How Can I Keep From Singing?” – Scenes from Opera, Operetta and Musical Theatre
Join the UM Opera Theatre Ensemble for a staged program of comic and dramatic scenes from operas, musical theatre, and operetta. The title of the production is based on the premiere of a new piece written by Price Walden, a UM music student, commissioned for the scenes program. Both traditional Italian operas by Mozart (La finta giardiniera) and Puccini (La Rondine) are joined by musicals such as The Light in the Piazza, Grease, Once, Little Women, and Candide. Also included are scenes in English from the operas Tartuffe, Hansel and Gretel, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, The Mikado. The program content is acceptable for a general audience. Director of Opera Theatre, Julia Aubrey, is joined by guest directors, René Pulliam and Seth Lieber from the Department of Theatre.
